Widely applauded American singer/songwriter Patty Griffin leads the Martha’s Vineyard Concert Series lineup for the month of August.

Known for her raw folk songwriting style, Griffin’s songs have been covered by myriad musical greats, including Emmylou Harris, Ellis Paul, Rory Block, and the Dixie Chicks.

The celebrated Griffin received the Artist of the Year Award from the American Music Association in 2007. That same year, her album Children Running Through won the Best Album Award. In 2011, Griffin’s album Downtown Church won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Gospel.

Griffin’s songs swoop you up and glide you down. Close your eyes and really listen, and they hold you safe the whole way down.

Griffin will perform at 8 p.m. on August 2 at the Old Whaling Church in Edgartown.

“Really looking forward to the Vineyard and The Old Whaling Church, which I hear is a beautiful place to play. Haven’t been to the island for over 20 years,” Patty told This Week on MV.

Taking the stage at 8 p.m. on August 8 and 9 at the Old Whaling Church is the best-selling author and humorist David Sedaris.

One of America’s preeminent humor writers, Sedaris is a master of satire when it comes to politics and cultural euphemisms.

Sedaris’s books include Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays: Naked; Me Talk Pretty One Day; Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim; and When You Are Engulfed in Flames. All became instant bestsellers. His most recent book, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, also quickly earned a spot on the bestseller’s list.

The audio version of Sedaris’s Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls is a 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards Nominee for Best Spoken Word Album.

He and his sister, Amy Sedaris, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama, Lincoln Center, and The Drama Department in New York City.
