For Sun-Soaked Days that End with Spectacular Sunsets, Book One of Island Tours Sunset Cruises

By Diane Alter

Without question, sensational sunsets of vibrant pinks, striking crimson, electric orange, and lemony yellow are one of the best shows on the island. And the best way to experience one of mother nature’s displays is via a guided sunset cruise with Island Tours.

Island Tours will take up to 13 guests in one of its luxury vans to the island’s premier spot to watch the sunset on Martha’s Vineyard: up-island at Menemsha beach. A centuries-old fishing village, Menemsha is located on the northern end of Chilmark.

Authentic, and charming with an old-world feel, Menemsha is picture-postcard (or in modern terms “Insta”) perfect. Dramatic sunsets there typically end with applause from those lucky enough to witness the last of the day’s light in bold colors of red, yellows, and orange spill out from the sky and disappear over the horizon.

“It is truly a unique experience,” John Tiernan of Island Tours told This Week on MV. “There are not many places on the East Coast where you can see the setting sun engulfed by the ocean as day morphs into night. It is spectacular. Our attentive staff makes it special and comfortable by providing adult beverages, beach chairs, and beach towels.”

Island Tours will also help guests place an order at one of Menemsha’s iconic seafood spots. Upon arrival, guests can simply walk and pick up their order and then head to the beach for an unforgettable sunset and picnic at dusk.

The trip from Dockside Inn in Oak Bluffs is about 30 minutes. The ride up-island is itself a delightful excursion. Island Tours also offers a 2.5 hour narrated sightseeing tour of all six towns, including a mid-tour stop at Aquinnah.

The tour begins in Oak Bluffs and passes through Vineyard Haven along Vineyard Sound and the Vineyard Haven harbor front. A knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide will keep your eyes peeled at the passing views with lots of insider Vineyard knowledge.

Pass by enchanting sea captains’ homes with historic widow walks, iconic scenes from the blockbuster film Jaws, beautiful vistas, and the storied Gingerbread cottages. The tour stops in Aquinnah for 30 minutes to allow time to explore the legendary Gay Head Lighthouse, see the famous cliffs, visit the cliffside shops, or enjoy a bowl of the island’s best clam chowder at Cliffhangers. Island Tours offers private tours and special event transportation, as well.

Sunsets remind us that everyday, no matter what has happened, ends in beauty and as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, so will the sunset. Tickets and additional information are available online at vineyardhistory.com.
