Good Things Come to Those Who Bait

Looking for some days of “reely” good fishing? Look no further than the 76th Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Fishing Derby.

This year’s storied event will take place from Sunday, September 12 through Saturday, October 16 starting at the Derby headquarters at Dock Street in Edgartown. Online pre-registration has begun at www.mvderby.com. The site also explains the rules and regulations, award structures, fees, prizes, and more.

“We enthusiastically welcome the 76th Derby for many reasons,” Derby Committee John Custer explained. “As you enjoy the coming five weeks of the event, thank you for remaining mindful of the values the Derby promotes. Practice good sportsmanship, offer help to fellow anglers. Be safe, protect the island’s natural beauty, and remember that it’s not all about catching fish.”

With Custer at the helm, the Derby Committee is spearheaded by 35 men and women committed to the event. The Derby is a crucial part of the MV community. Indeed, The Derby Scholarship Program is really the main event of this month’s long fishing expedition and tournament.

In 2021, even amid a pandemic that comprised last year’s event, the Derby awarded a record-high $76,000 to nine Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School graduates. Since its inception in 1987, over $750,000 has been distributed through this island program.

Fishermen will tell you that fish come in three sizes, small, medium, and the one that got away. Don’t let the 76th MV Fishing Derby get away from you. Register now.
