Take a Break from the Maddening Crowds and Walk This Way

The best thing about visiting Martha’s Vineyard is hearing waves lapping in the background, smelling the hospitable sea in the air and walking along the curves of the shore’s fringe knowing that when you look out and beyond, you know for certain you are somewhere special.

Indeed, the Vineyard is an island of many earthly delights. Count hiking trails among the Vineyard’s myriad enchantments. A magical place to hike in and off season on the Vineyard is the John Presbury Norton Farm to Womesket Preserve.

A short tenth of a mile down State Road in West Tisbury from the intersection with Old Country Road, a sign on the right leads to this hidden hiking gem.

This unspoiled trail was secured thanks to Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank. The trail is a continuous public trail measuring some four miles in length. The land’s principal appeal is its lively and extensive farm fields. Livestock linger on acres and acres of gorgeous green landscapes that seem endless. It is easy to forget where you are and why.

Hikers will relish the contrast between the dry open plains against the sodden wetlands along easy hiking trail through stately woods, across untroubled open fields, to Blackwater Pond. Weekend warriors may even experience the urge to pick up and carry on through more trails. Dogs are welcome.
