For 27 years, Third World Trading Co. has Brought Products From All Over the World to Circuit Ave.

Walking up Circuit Avenue, you are constantly reminded that you are in Oak Bluffs. Night and day, islanders and tourists fill the always buzzing street of this quaint New England town, usually with an ice cream in hand. The landscape, however, changes dramatically as you approach the end of the street thanks to a uniquely different store named Third World Trading Co..

The colorful storefront is just a taste of what one encounters once inside this welcoming shop.

Lori Katsaunakis opened Third World Trading Co. some 27 years ago. She has filled the store with things like dresses sporting whimsical patterns, flip-flops covered in fake grass, and handmade embroidered wallets. Every item is hand selected by Lori. They come from exotic locations in Asia and South America, as well as from local and nearby artists.

The boutique had a few incarnations before beginning its year-round residence on Circuit Avenue.

It all started when Lori’s boyfriend stopped in Ecuador during a fishing trip in Chile. He decided to bring home a selection of sweaters and hats for Lori. She immediately fell in love with how colorful, comfortable and warm they were. The following Christmas, Lori sent a friend back to the country to buy more products. Products in hand, Lori sublet retail space in Vineyard Haven and started selling her “third world” products.

After the business was established, Lori began working with artists and brands from all over the world, each culture bringing their own unique contribution to the boutique. Nearly three decades later, it is clear that Lori’s early intuition was correct—and incredibly lucrative.

“We have something that you don’t find in the mall,” Lori said. “You can find something unique. Every piece of clothing is different. And it’s nice that you can pick out your own individual bag or wallet.”

New additions this year include cashmere ponchos, which Lori says you will not find priced better anywhere.

As you walk around the store, you definitely feel like you are traveling around in the world and shopping in Bali, Guatemala, India and Ecuador. Wistful wind chimes sing and mobiles flutter from the ceiling. Shelves are lined with stuffed animals, where iguanas, sloths, owls and giraffes all live happily together. Tables are filled with a hodgepodge of necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

The back of the store houses essential oils and incenses, both dearly beloved by costumers. Tiny colorful Buddhas also sit nearby, making the corner a feel like a very authentic taste of the Orient.

Third World Trading Co brings the great big world under one roof, right here on Martha’s Vineyard.
