It’s time to “whistle a happy tune!” A rousing production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I will be performed on Martha’s Vineyard next month. Based on the book Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, The King and I presents the story of an English schoolteacher named Anna who travels to Siam to tutor a royal family in the mid-1800’s. As Anna forms a relationship with the royal children, her modern ideas and western attitudes initially alarm the King of Siam. Eventually, Anna and the King are able to look past the challenges that occur as a result of their conflicting worldviews and form a bond of mutual love and respect. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic score will have you whistling in your seats. The majestic costumes, sets and beautiful choreography will set the mood for a musical experience that is truly “something wonderful.”

The King and I will be presented by The Island Theatre Workshop on August 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29 at 7:00pm, and August 23 and 30 at 3:00pm. The oldest-running theatre company on the island, Island Theatre Workshop was founded in 1968 by Mary Payne and continues to offer performance opportunities for children, teens, and adults. As part of the Island Theatre Workshop’s Family Classic Theatre series, The King and I follows last year’s widely successful production of Peter Pan, and 2013’s production of The Wizard Of Oz. Island Theatre Workshop Artistic Director Kevin Ryan serves as stage director for the production, while James Higgins serves as music director.

Performances will take place at the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Performing Arts Center, on 100 Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in Oak Bluffs. Matinee performances will also include a special “meet and greet” with the cast following the production. Tickets are $22 for adults and $15 for students and are currently available at ticketsmv.com/itw. Tickets will also be available at the door.  For more details, please call (508) 737-8550 or visit www.itwmv.org.
