Friendship Blossoms in Playhouse Production of A Walk in the Woods

by Matthew Mariner

The first preview for Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse’s A Walk in The Woods was a triumphant beginning for this thought-provoking drama. Playing at the Patricia Neal Stage from June 26-July 18, A Walk in the Woods tells the story of two American and Russian Cold War negotiators who are trying to hash out conflicting agendas to solidify a common goal. Lee Blessing’s Pulitzer nominated script brings to light the way in which individuals of different backgrounds can find common ground by developing a personal relationship. This unlikely partnership radiates a heartwarming message of acceptance and respect for differences, and leaves audience members ready to take on their personal relationships with rejuvenated eyes.

Daren Kelley and Adrienne D. Williams carry the show with passionate energy and truthful integrity. Andrey (Kelley) charismatically charms the audience as he attempts to begin a friendship with the initial standoffish and intensely serious Joan (Williams) by taking her on a walk into the heart of the natural world. Kelly’s performance clearly displays the character’s need to bring forth some sort of color and substance from the bleak negotiation process.  His uncanny skill of forging a personal relationship into the negotiation process sends a powerful message to the audience about a frequently missing aspect of any successful compromise.  Williams’ performance captivates the audience, who become thoroughly enchanted by her character’s growth over the course of the play. As Joan learns to look at the world outside of her own bubble, she, in turn, connects with Andrey in the hope for a more peaceful and efficient world. The audience rejoices as the two characters learn to balance each other. The passion of these actors submerges us profoundly into the depths of their characters’ psyches.

Director MJ Bruder Munafo does a stunning job of staging the production. The emotionally–driven movement and depth of the characters clearly demonstrate the friction and intensity of the character’s unfolding relationship. Munafo and Lighting Designer Jeffery L. Salzberg steal “oooohs and ahhs” from the audience as the artistic visual change of the seasons mirrors the growth of the characters. A soaring original score by Dan Murphy accompanies these powerful visual moments. Costume Designer Cynthia Bermudes and Set Designer Mac Young also add to the visual success of the production, accentuating all the right colors and shapes, and symbolically tying up the show in a nice little ribbon. The uplifting message of the play reminds audiences that it is in the end the little things in lives that truly matter. Sometimes big speeches, lists of numbers and agendas and great fanfare ultimately carry little impact. More often, a simple walk in the woods with a friend can cultivate the most hope for a better world. Don’t miss A Walk on the Woods! Tickets are available at www.vineyardplayhouse.org.
