From Bagels to Coffee to Wraps, Murdick’s Cafe offers it All

by Eleanor Harte

Walking into Murdick’s Cafe in Edgartown reminds one of the pleasures that food can bring. From the smell of the fudge that’s made right next door to the freshly brewed coffee, a visit to Murdick’s is a feast for the senses. You are greeted by a friendly employee, who wears a dark green polo and a beige hat. They stand behind a counter, and between you two lies a colorful spread of muffins, salads, and other breakfast pastries. Behind them, chalkboards hang on the wall, describing the foods that can soon be yours, if you wish. To your right, cases of water, juice and soda are within your grasp. From breakfast sandwiches to muffins, to bagels and wraps, Murdick’s Cafe has breakfast and lunch for everyone. The cafe is clean and bright, and it has a friendly vibe that encourages you to take a seat.

Just next door is the famous Murdick’s Fudge. The company has been making fudge and brittle using the very same recipes since 1887. All fudge is made on the premises, and the company ships fudge worldwide each and every day. They have three locations on the island: one block away from the ferry in Vineyard Haven, on Circuit Ave in Oak Bluffs, and on North Water Street in Edgartown. All three locations make fudge, but the Edgartown location is distinguished by the fact that attached to it is the cafe.

When you bite into a Murdick’s Cafe breakfast bagel, you are immediately aware of how fresh it is. The cheese melts like nothing you have ever tasted before. The bacon is crispy and delectable, adding a bit of flavoring that’s just the right touch. An egg seals the deal. Toasted to just the perfect temperature, the bagel sandwich is the best way to start your morning that you never knew you needed.

Murdick’s has many options for lunch. A sandwich called ‘Lighthouse’ looks especially delicious, with pesto, provolone, roasted red peppers, olives, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and even more. For those who prefer some meat with their lunch, there’s ‘Whaler’, a combination of roast beef, swiss, tomato, red onion, mushrooms, mayo and horseradish on ciabatta. And then there’s the classics like chicken salad, BLT, turkey club and more.
If you’re in a rush, you can pick up a scone or muffin to go with your coffee, or grab a prepared salad. There’s an array of juices and sodas too. Whatever you choose to do, whether it’s to eat at the cafe or take your food to go, make sure you make a stop next door to grab some fudge before you head out!
